The Use of AI to Assist Writing Your Paper

Large Language Models (LLM) can be used to assist with scientific writing, but only with utmost care. LLM’s are based on a statistical analysis of billions of texts to predict which word will follow the previous. Applications such as ChatGPT do not in any way “understand” the texts they produce. Hence, there is a risk of factually incorrect content. Even when LLM’s are used solely to improve the English of a scientifically correct text, the introduction of content errors or incorrect corrections is conceivable. Developments of applications of LLM’s for writing are very fast, so the situation at the moment of writing, beginning of 2024, may be outdated at the moment of reading. Journals are starting to demand that the usage of LLM based application while writing are reported in the M&M section or in a separate statement.
