Optimizing Solid Waste Management: The Ecosort Solution

Effective managing and recycling waste poses a considerable challenge. The mixing of various waste types can have adverse effects on health. However, leveraging advanced computer technology, such as Machine Learning, offers a solution to segregate waste efficiently. This approach contributes to reducing the volume of waste disposed of in landfills. Our research indicates that a significant portion of the collected waste has the potential for reuse, yet the lack of adequate technology hinders us from capitalizing on this opportunity. Employing computer systems for waste sorting proves to be not only cost-effective but also time-saving, as it automates the sorting process. It is crucial to acknowledge that, while these systems enhance efficiency, they may not be flawless, as suggested by previous research. The primary objective of our study is to develop an “Eco-Sort system,” utilizing computer programs and specialized techniques like ML and Object Detection to categorize waste into distinct groups. This systematic approach enhances organization and overall effectiveness in waste management. This paper delves into the intricacies of waste management, highlighting how the Eco-Sort system could significantly contribute to positive change.
