摘要

This chapter introduces readers to essential terms and phrases that will be used throughout the book, such as the Deaf/deaf binary, various members of the deaf community, and audism. The chapter creates a framework for understanding deaf and hearing integrated theatre as the center point of a spectrum with Deaf theatre and mainstream theatre on opposite ends. It also defines several common characteristics of integrated theatre, discusses what success looks like for integrated productions, and elaborates on the need for further integration of deaf and hearing artists in theatrical productions in general. The chapter highlights three non-negotiable principles that are critical for an integrated production to be successful. Finally, the chapter ends by introducing four productions that will serve as case studies and be referenced throughout the book.
