Looking Beyond the Frame

Chapter 8, ‘Looking beyond the Frame’ asks what practical effects the arts can or should have on our understanding of the world and on how we lead our lives within it. Three practical functions of art as representation are discussed under the broad headings of celebration, illumination and participation. These practical effects of artistic representation arguably do more to explain the appeal and persistence of the arts than can any number of aesthetic theories or judgements.
