One Art After Another

Chapter 7, ‘One Art after Another’, explores the many kinds of connection and interaction between the various art forms. The arts may seek to imitate life, but frequently they also seek to imitate, draw inspiration from or collaborate with each other. Thus we find not only the play or the novel, but the film of the play or the novel; not only the painting, but the poem about, or the novel inspired by, the painting; and so on. The close connections between the arts are also revealed in the common vocabulary used in the analysis and appreciation of a wide range of artworks. The nature and contexts of art are such that no one art form can escape comparison with others.
