Sudden hearing loss (SHL) is the rapid onset of the sensation of hearing loss in one or both ears [1–3]; sudden sensorineural hearing loss is a subtype of sensorineural hearing loss that occurs in less than 72 h and requires the fulfilment of certain audiometric criteria defined in the published consensus [2–5] and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is when the cause is not identified [3–5].
