Human-computer interaction (HCI) professionals and designers play an important role in shaping the user experience (UX) of future digital solutions. They try to understand the real needs and challenges of the target audience, while also understanding the capabilities of the utilized technologies and their potential to enhance people’s lives. The improvements in computing power, advanced IT infrastructure, and reduced storage costs have facilitated the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) systems and data-driven products. The HCI community and designers are faced with new opportunities and challenges. Two questions are raised from different perspectives. First, how does the daily work of UX professionals change when using AI systems as supporting tools? Second, how do design professionals’ work processes and methods change when they create UX for AI applications? This chapter explores the opportunities and challenges for designers in their role as part of the development team. Based on a literature review, the new or adapted techniques and frameworks for designing for (or with) AI systems are described. Finally, the authors’ view of the future of design is discussed.
