Visitor’s Museum Experience Model in Mixed Reality Environment from the Perspective of 4E Cognition

With the advancement of technology, museums are evolving beyond static displays of artifacts to become more innovative and interactive cultural hubs. Embodied cognition plays a crucial role in this transformation. Cognition is the process of understanding and interacting with the world through physical means such as senses, movement, and spatial perception. In museums, it influences how we experience exhibits, remember history, and comprehend culture. Concurrently, the integration of mixed reality technology can extend existing spatial scenarios, assisting museums in integrating key information within exhibition spaces, thereby enhancing the overall user experience. This paper, grounded in the 4E cognition theory (Embodied Cognition, Extended Cognition, Embedded Cognition, and Enactive Cognition) and incorporating the Vision OS experience elements, employs a combined approach of qualitative and quantitative research methods. It explores the primary factors influencing participants’ museum experiences and proposes a new model to measure the impact of mixed reality on museum visitors’ experiences and cognition, providing new theoretical tools for advancing museum digitization efforts and the design practices of mixed reality experiences.
