Using the Technology Acceptance Model to Explore the User Experience of Smart Kitchen Use Among Older Adult Women

Smart kitchens can facilitate aging in place, improve older adults’ autonomy in cooking, and reduce household injuries. Understanding the experiences of older adults can improve smart kitchen accessibility, acceptance, usability, and design. In this qualitative descriptive study, a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) describes the user experience of thirteen older adult women in a smart kitchen. Participants prepared a standardized recipe in a smart kitchen and were interviewed with semi-structured questions afterward. Data was analyzed according to TAM, and four themes were identified: ease-of-use, perceived usefulness, attitude towards use, and intention-to-use. Ease-of-use was hindered by the participants’ technological competence and the smart kitchen’s innovative design, leading to challenges in physical and cognitive accessibility. However, participants perceived the smart kitchen to be easy to use. Regarding perceived usefulness, notable benefits included preventing ergonomic risks and enhancing usability for individuals using wheelchairs. However, there was a common belief that smart kitchens are more suited for younger individuals than for older adults. Regarding attitudes towards use, there was a perceived interest in using technological devices in the kitchen, provided they are not overly complex. The intention to use smart kitchens is influenced by a lack of knowledge regarding their existence and usability. It is important to implement training and awareness so clients can correctly use smart kitchens and perceive their benefits to improve adoption.
