Historical and Institutional Contexts of Leadership in Africa

Pre-colonial Africa was marked by a variety of leadership structures, from centralized kingdoms to decentralized tribes and clans. Centralized kingdoms, such as the Ashanti Empire in present-day Ghana and the Zulu Kingdom in South Africa, had hierarchical systems with kings or chiefs wielding significant authority over political, economic, and military matters.
