The Cauldron of Knowing of the Academic Manager

Knowing-in-practice notion highlights the role of human action in organizational work in situated contexts, in which knowing is a social condition for learning a practice. Due to its complex nature, university management and the role of the academic manager are suitable fields to consider this theoretical focus, as our research findings have evidenced. Involving the knowing-in-practice notion and the academic manager in the study has resulted in the proposition of a framework, named The Cauldron of Knowing of the Academic Manager. In this chapter, we briefly develop the elements that are part of this framework. We deepen the culinary metaphor regarding the academic manager’s knowing, the way the framework’s elements are connected, and the dynamic behind these connections. Some implications for university management are presented.
