The Blueprint to STEM Mentorship for Inner City Youth

Since 2016, 10 cohorts of high school students have progressed through Emory School of Medicine’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) program, the Health Careers Collaborative (HCC). HCC works with inner city youth to address health inequities by exposing high school students from underserved, low-socioeconomic status, and minority areas to health topics and mentorship within the health professions. Working with Title One schools in Metro Atlanta, HCC has a curriculum designed for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. We have had a 100% retention rate and very positive student evaluations. Students enrolled in HCC have become active members at Georgia’s HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) Chapters. Additionally, the majority of our students subsequently have enrolled in higher education programs, including PWIs (predominantly white institutions), HBCU s (historically black colleges and universities), and technical schools.
