摘要

COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of telehealth and health information technology to sustain healthcare capacity. However, barriers like low digital literacy, lack of technology access, and privacy concerns can inhibit usage, and increase disparities. These challenges are pronounced in underserved urban populations; and among persons with lower education attainment and low income. In this chapter, we discuss these barriers as well as strategies that can be employed to address critical gaps. Although technology enables healthcare delivery, it should strengthen, not replace, community partnerships and engagement. Opportunities exist for healthcare providers to collaborate with community-based organizations, conduct health screenings within trusted spaces where people spend most of their time, and leverage digital platforms to foster health promotion activities. Comprehensive, collaborative initiatives promoting education, digital and health literacy, and community connections can help advance health equity. Bridging the gap in digital literacy can empower communities to harness technology to promote health, equity, and wellness. A balanced approach to integrating technology alongside meaningful community engagement is also recommended. This book chapter highlights the intricacies of the digital divide in lower resourced settings and provides insights into potential strategies for enhancing digital and health literacy among at-risk populations to achieve more equitable access to emerging health technologies.
