Culturally Relevant Community Engagement Strategies for Promoting Cervical Cancer Prevention Among Black Women

A deeper understanding of a person’s unique cultural experiences and social context can provide vital insight into their health decisions and behaviors. This chapter discusses the use of a culturally oriented framework, the PEN-3 cultural model, with qualitative inquiries in examining the cultural and social factors that influence Black women’s engagement in cervical cancer preventive behaviors, such as cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination uptake. We also present examples of successful strategies used to engage African American and African immigrant community members into cervical cancer prevention research, with some recommendations for future intervention components among both population groups.
