Hemoglobin evolved for the purpose of transporting and delivering oxygen. Its story, in the simplest terms, entwines breath, blood, and the circulation of the blood to supply the body with the oxygen it must have for the combustion of the foods we eat to generate energy. We’ll look at some of the seminal discoveries that preceded the discovery of hemoglobin itself.
