Bie-modernism: From Cultural Computing to Social Computing

Bie-modernism theory is an international and comprehensive theory. It is based on the exact capture and generalization of the social condition in the process of modernization in the late-developed countries, so it can be considered first and foremost as a theory of social analysis. This social condition has been named “Bie-modern”, i.e., Bie-modern Condition. As far as China is concerned, the Bie-modern Condition has begun to emerge since contemporary China entered the process of high-speed modernization through the Reform and Opening-up. The main characteristic of Bie-modern Condition is the “Spatialization of Time”: the simultaneous existence of pre-modernity, modernity and post-modernity in society, all three of which do not have a linear temporal stage of development as in Western countries. In this social condition, which is characterized by a mixture of features, the elements of pre-modernity, modernity and post-modernity exist in Harmonious Complicity in a complex and variable form. Bie-modernity, as a kind of specious modernity, actually brings to the people living in it a complex experience of life, an experience that often results in life’s suffering. Bie-modernsim theory is proposed to analyze this condition and find a solution to the Bie-modern Condition through interdisciplinary research. In the collaboration with computer science, Bie-modernsim Cultural Computing was proposed. It is an approach to cultural computing that is guided by the concept of Bie-modernsim and the theoretical propositions put forward by the theory of Bie-modernsim as a methodology. Combined with the results of existing research, it can be seen that this theory not only renews the scope of application of the tools of computer theory, but also greatly broadens the space of research in the field of culture, provides a new possibility for the production of knowledge, and enriches the theoretical content of interdisciplinary subjects. This paper believes that in addition to cultural computing, there is a new possibility of Bie-modernsim theory that is being generated, and it is Bie-modernsim social computing. In this paper, a theoretical system of Bie-modernsim Social Computing is proposed, including the guiding theory, research tasks, research goals, research objects, and research methodology. In addition, in order to improve the construction of this theoretical system, this dissertation also designs an experimental project of Bie-modernsim Social Computing. The experimental program is just a conception, which intends to analyze and confirm the existence and characteristics of Bie-modern Condition by studying the hot events on Sina Weibo, the mainstream social platform in China, and tries to propose a method to further research on Bie-modernity of the subjects. The program is to be further practiced and verified.
