Utilization of Agricultural Waste for Water and Wastewater Treatment Processes

This chapter explores the utilization of agricultural waste for water and wastewater treatment processes. The background highlights the increasing need for sustainable and cost-effective methods in water treatment. The objectives are to explore the types, properties, and composition of agricultural waste, as well as the challenges and opportunities in utilizing it for water treatment. Various physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes are discussed, including sedimentation and filtration, adsorption, coagulation and flocculation, oxidation-reduction reactions, aerobic and anaerobic digestion, and constructed wetlands. The methods and technologies utilizing agricultural waste for water treatment are examined, such as activated carbon, biochar, natural coagulants, composite coagulants, modified membranes, and bio-inspired membranes. Case studies demonstrate the successful utilization of agricultural waste for adsorption, coagulation and flocculation, membrane filtration, and biological treatment. The advantages of utilizing agricultural waste for water treatment are highlighted, along with the limitations and challenges. Future perspectives and research directions are discussed, leading to the conclusion that agricultural waste holds great potential for sustainable water and wastewater treatment.
