The SANDF has faced three major challenges, how to create a cultureCulture of tolerance, restore the legitimacy of the armed forcesArmed forces and value diversityDiversity. While the various affirmative actionAffirmative action, equal opportunity and cultural diversityDiversity programmes created a cultureCulture of tolerance, political patronage has undermined meritocracy and led to a devaluing of diversityDiversity, affecting both militaryMilitary professionalism and effectiveness.
