This chapter will examine the challenges and opportunities in implementing gender equalityGender equality in policing in United NationsUnited Nations (UN) peace operations. In the past decade, the UN has adopted ten resolutions on womenWomen, peace and security emphasising its criticality in international security. Yet, womenWomen’s meaningful participation in police components mandated to bring security and peace in conflict-ridden countries remain elusive. WomenWomen represented an aggregated total of only 1,619 (17.6%) individual police officers and formed police units deployed in the UNUnited Nations peace operations worldwide in 2020. Tracking the change within each type of personnel demonstrates gains made. Women’sWomen participation as individual police officers increased almost four-fold from 7% in 2009 to 29% in 2020 and six-fold for formed police units from 2% to 13% in the same period. The article will explore obstacles to the participation of womenWomen in UN police peacekeepingPolice peacekeeping and genderGender parity initiatives implemented within the UN providing insights on effectiveness, gaps, and recommendations for further research and practice.
