A Framework for a Gender-Informed, Culturally Competent Mentorship Program for Women in the Canadian Armed Forces

The purpose of mentorshipMentorship is to support people's career and personal development, and it has been identified as being particularly useful for people who are historically underrepresented in particular professions. A study was completed to explore the possibility of a mentorship programMentorship program for womenWomen in the Canadian Armed ForcesCanadian Armed Forces (CAF) using multiple phases that included a scoping review, interviews, resource mining and review, framework development, resource development, and validation. Interviews were conducted with subject matter experts in mentorshipMentorship as well as Canadian servicewomen and veterans who had served or are serving as mentorsMentor and menteesMentee. The interview data revealed overall support for the idea of a program specifically designed for womenWomen in the CAF. Interviewees described their positive experiences with the network and community-building that mentorshipMentorship provided to them, especially working in a male-dominated Canadian militaryMilitary. This chapter focuses on the interviews that informed the creation of a mentorshipMentorship framework.
