In response to escalating global water crises, there has been a notable advancement in the methods and approaches used for monitoring and management of water resources. From traditional data-driven models to sophisticated and advanced geospatial techniques and artificial intelligenceArtificial intelligence (AI) models, the studies on water resources have witnessed significant advancement in the past few decades. This article outlines the progress in water resource studies and recent trends that signify a paradigm shift in the field, emphasizing advancements in methodologies. Geospatial technologies, encompassing satellite-based remote sensingRemote sensing and Geographic Information SystemsGeographical information system (GIS), are increasingly employed for precise and large-scale data collection. The AI algorithms such as machine and deep learning models are being deployed to analyze this data, offering predictive insights, and enhancing decision-making processes. The geospatial techniques and artificial intelligenceArtificial intelligence (AI) have provided several advantages in water resource studies over traditional models by offering high-resolution spatial data, facilitating real-time monitoring, predictive modelling, complicated pattern detection, and climate change adaptation for more sustainable and informed management.
