The previous understanding of Maya civilization has been upended since LiDAR technology has been introduced to the field of archaeology. The perception of the history and population of vast Maya society among Maya scholars has so greatly changed that what they knew must be rewritten. The new scientific tool has detected about 954 unknown archaeological settlements that were previously not even suspected to exist. The introduction of LiDAR technology to Maya investigations has opened an entirely new understanding of the numbers and extent of the vast Maya population.
