Later Cities of the Yucatan Peninsula

摘要

The Late Postclassic city of Mayapan followed Chichen Itza in its development, in its architecture and in its artistic styles. Mayapan was much smaller in area and less influential that Chichen Itza; its population peaked at 17,000 but it was occupied for a lengthy period. The Maya god Kukulcan was highly honored there, just as he was in Tula and Chichen Itza. Several buildings and the majestic El Castillo were copied in Mayapan and many structures held astronomical alignments. The Isle of Cozumel and the city of Tulum are also discussed.
