Glaucoma Associated with Acquired Conditions

Secondary childhood glaucoma can be associated with non-acquired disorders (ocular or systemic) or acquired conditions. Pediatric cataract surgery is a vital etiology that leads to acquired childhood glaucoma. Due to this group’s high prevalence of cases, this theme will be addressed in a separate chapter (chapter “Glaucoma Following Cataract Surgery”). This chapter will detail the most common causes of glaucoma associated with secondary acquired conditions. Treating glaucoma in the setting of a co-existing ocular disease can be challenging. Glaucoma often develops due to mixed mechanisms, and managing these cases requires treatment of the underlying pathology in addition to glaucoma. Understanding the peculiarities of each acquired condition can help choose the most appropriate medical and/or surgical treatment specific to each.
