Vision Rehabilitation in Childhood Glaucoma

Low vision is a critical condition that must be recognized early in pediatric populations. Vision impairment is characterized by reduced visual acuity, progressive loss of peripheral vision, or loss of contrast sensitivity. Vision loss in patients with childhood glaucoma can have profound developmental, social, and psychological consequences, resulting in significant reductions in functional visual ability and quality of life. Vision rehabilitation has been proven to maximize a child’s vision potential and quality of life. Early referral to vision rehabilitation may also improve a child’s academic performance and reduce disparities in educational achievement. Interventions include optical devices, such as spectacles, illuminated magnifiers, microscopes, and telescopes; electronic devices, such as computers, tablets, and auditory tools; and non-optical devices, like large print and tactile feedback. In the pediatric population, it is important to provide age-appropriate interventions to address patient’s needs, educational requirements, and changing vision.
