Understanding Chinese University Students’ Perspectives on and Challenges with the Technology Based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia: A Qualitative Exploration
摘要
While the technology based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for insomnia (TCBTI) has been found effective in treating insomnia, its adoption among Chinese university students remains limited. This study explored the perspectives, attitudes, and potential challenges related to TCBTI among Chinese university students. The research involved 30 participants from the South China University of Technology who had experienced or are dealing with insomnia. The majority of participants expressed a willingness to explore therapy-based apps as a means to improve their insomnia condition. However, a notable barrier exists due to a lack of understanding of therapeutic principles, leading to reluctance to execute certain tasks. Therefore, therapy apps must convey relevant principles quickly and straightforwardly, enabling users to comprehend and willingly engage in the therapeutic process. Some participants preferred the app to take effect within the first week, to reduce anxiety and improve sleep efficiency. They emphasized that their motivation to continue using the app might diminish if the effects are not noticeable within a relatively short time. To enhance app adherence, designers should consider addressing potential challenges college students face and aligning app functionalities with user expectations. This involves compiling insights on adherence challenges and incorporating them into the app design to encourage sustained usage among college students.
