Comparing Different Methods for Remote Configuration of Pervasive Augmented Reality Experiences: A User Study in Logistics Procedures

Augmented Reality (AR) is a promising technology in Industry 4.0, improving industrial procedures and reducing errors. Using a Human-Centered Design methodology, a Pervasive AR tool was initially created to support logistics tasks in the shop floor. To benefit from the tool, a prior configuration of the AR environment is required. This work proposes a remote tool to configure AR content in the industrial scenario, replacing the current in-person configuration. Therefore, we developed three methods (based on different environments and materials): non-immersive virtual reality with keyboard and mouse, hands-free AR and immersive virtual reality with controllers. A user study with 24 participants was conducted to compare their usability and performance. Results show that users can easily perform the configuration remotely. The immersive virtual reality method presented a better accuracy and higher preference. However, the AR method proved to be efficient and a more natural solution.
