Navigating Real-To-Virtual Onboarding: A Holistic Exploration and Framework for Immersive Transitions

This research manuscript is dedicated to exploring the critical process of onboarding individuals from the tangible, real-world environment into the immersive realm of the virtual environment. It seeks to investigate the multifaceted nature of onboarding for a diverse group of users, with their experiences being differentiated based on their prior familiarity with the virtual environment and the tool employed for this study—the Virtual Reality (VR) device. This device serves as a transformative bridge, facilitating users’ transition from the physical world to the virtual one. Within this overarching context, the study categorizes users into three distinct types: novices, intermediates, and experts. Each of these user types exhibits unique requirements and demands varying levels of guidance and support during the onboarding process. At the core of this research lies a comprehensive exploration of users’ journeys, encompassing both micro- and macro-level interactions within the virtual environment. These interactions are accompanied by related comprehensions, predictions, and assumptions as users navigate the intricate path from the real to the virtual world. The entirety of this journey is meticulously depicted in a descriptive manner, elucidating and accentuating the pain points encountered along the way. This journey also involves decoding key factors, including users’ cognitive abilities, the dynamics of the learning curve they traverse, the relevance and significance of the information presented to them, and the triggers that facilitate comprehension. Moreover, it delves into the pivotal aspect of the interaction between the real world and virtual surroundings, a dynamic factor that significantly influences users’ overall experiences. This interaction encompasses the seamless fusion of physical and digital elements, enabling users to navigate and interact within the virtual environment effortlessly. By comprehending the cognitive abilities of users and the nuances of their learning curves, we can gain valuable insights into what is still required to optimize the onboarding experience effectively. Identifying pertinent information while filtering out irrelevant details aids in streamlining the comprehension process, ensuring that users are not overwhelmed with extraneous information. These factors collectively contribute to crafting a more immersive and gratifying user experience that transcends the boundaries of both the real and virtual worlds. To gather data for this research, a methodical approach based on the completion of a task is employed. This approach generates qualitative data, which is further complemented by a structured questionnaire designed to elicit quantitative responses. The synergistic fusion of qualitative and quantitative data serves to provide a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the subject matter, enabling the acquisition of deeper insights into the intricacies of the onboarding process. The goal of this research project is to produce a complete framework that carefully encompasses the nuances inherent in the process of onboarding into virtual settings. This framework was carefully designed to improve the onboarding process and is distinguished by the combination of quantitative and qualitative data that it incorporates. This approach broadens its scope to include the complex interplay of social and emotional components, going beyond only addressing the technical aspects of onboarding, such as software training and system navigation. This comprises the growth of bonds and the nurturing of a strong sense of belonging, enhancing the user’s trip through the digital environment.
