This chapter highlights the importance of wood density (WD) in estimating biomassBiomass, focusing on the crucial role of carbon sequestrationCarbon sequestration by terrestrial vegetation in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. It discusses the variation in carbon sequestration capacity across biomes due to species differences and management practices. It is observed that tropicalTropical forests, which are known for their high diversity, can host more than 300 tree species in a one hectare, with substantial variations in biomass. The biomass of individual trees is primarily determined by wood volume and density, influenced by the genetic makeup of the tree. Size and wood density are largely independent factors, making WD a crucial parameter in estimating tree biomass. Studies in the Amazon have shown that species-specific WD is important for accurate above ground biomass (AGBAGB) estimations, and there are significant variations across forest types and regions. It is concluded that WD has a substantial impact on biomass, indicating potential overestimations of aboveground carbon stocks at continental levels if pan-tropical WD means are applied indiscriminately. The chapter underlines the necessity of considering species effects and individual WD in biomassBiomass studies, providing insights into methods to reduce errors in biomass estimations and presenting a useful table of WD values for different geographical regions.
