Honey Debridement

Wound healing remains a complex process with an arena of active research since long. Presence of necrotic slough is not only a hindrance in natural healing process but also a source of bacterial growth and infection. The TIME framework used in wound bed preparation advocates removal of devitalized tissue. Honey has been used as a material for wound dressing and wound healing since time immemorial and recently has been advocated as a modern wound dressing in a more widespread way. The antimicrobial action of honey has proved its value in the treatment of various wounds infection with increasing evidence that honey dressing increases the wound healing and the bacterial clearance rate. In addition, it can also shorten wound debridement time. Acceptability of honey dressings appears to be high among patients. The impact on factors such as pain reduction, odour control and exudate management has positive impact on quality of life when honey is used as a debriding or a dressing agent.
