Generative Design Prosthesis Proposal for the Case of a Bullet Impact in the Skull, Made of PMMA

With a personalized design, the main idea of the present study is to provide a generative design of a prosthesis with an alternative biocompatible material known as PMMA. Titanium is commonly the principal option for surgical material, but there is another alternative when the first implant causes tissue inflammation: polymethyl-methacrylate. To achieve this goal, patient data was obtained from a CT scan with the use of a standardized medical imaging protocol, known as DICOM. In addition, CAD and CAE tools were used to create the preliminary version of the skull area. It was characterized according to the patient’s needs. For this case of direct gunshot trauma, part of the cranial vault and facial bones was reconstructed. Finally, a mathematical model with a static study in FEM showed the structural behavior of the PMMA material. Once the results of equivalent von Mises stress and total deformation are discussed, the medical staff can determine if the behavior trend is functional.
