Mood Disorders
摘要
Mood disorders, characterized by persistent alterations in mood that impair daily functioning and encompass depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disorder. Depression, marked by chronic sadness and loss of interest, affects millions of individuals annually, posing risks of physical health issues and suicide if left untreated. Dysthymia manifests as a prolonged, low mood, impacting daily living despite less severe symptoms than major depression. Bipolar disorder feature episodes of mania or hypomania alternating with depression, with untreated cases carrying grave consequences. Distinguishing normal sadness and grief from pathological mood disorders is crucial, warranting professional intervention when symptoms impede daily life. Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners play a vital role in recognizing mood disorder risk factors such as heredity and stress, enabling preventive interventions. Cultural and individual considerations shape the experience and expression of mood disorders, necessitating tailored care approaches. This chapter delves into the diagnostic criteria, pharmacotherapy, adverse effects, and treatments for depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder I and II, and bereavement, empowering PMHNPs in comprehensive mood disorder management.
