Sexual Dysfunctions, Gender Dysphoria, and Paraphilic Disorders

Sexual health is an integral aspect of overall well-being, yet it remains a taboo topic in health care. As psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs), addressing sexual dysfunctions, gender dysphoria, and paraphilic disorders is crucial for providing comprehensive care to patients. Sexual dysfunctions, which encompass problems with desire, arousal, orgasm, and pain during sexual activity, are prevalent and can significantly impact individuals’ quality of life and relationships. Gender dysphoria, characterized by distress due to incongruence between assigned gender and gender identity, requires sensitive and affirming care. Additionally, understanding paraphilic disorders, such as pedophilia and fetishism, is essential for recognizing and addressing abnormal sexual interests or behaviors. This chapter delves into the assessment, diagnosis, and management of sexual dysfunctions, gender dysphoria, and paraphilic disorders, including foundational knowledge, diagnostic criteria, pharmacological interventions, and therapeutic approaches.
