Sleep-Wake Disorders

  • Trae Stewart

摘要

Quality sleep is essential for overall mental and physical health, yet many individuals struggle with persistent sleep issues. Sleep disorders can arise from various factors and may be indicative of underlying mental or medical conditions. The DSM-5 categorizes sleep-wake disorders into dyssomnias and parasomnias, with insomnia being the most prevalent condition. Insomnia, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy are among the common sleep disorders that significantly impact individuals’ daily functioning and quality of life. Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) play a crucial role in educating patients, providing therapeutic interventions, and prescribing medications to address sleep disturbances. This chapter discusses the physiology of sleep, common sleep disorders, diagnostic criteria, therapeutic approaches, and pharmacological interventions to manage sleep-wake disorders.
