“Mismatched Aid” - Tasks for Counselling, Development, and Implementation

The social participation of individuals with disabilities is significantly influenced by barrier-free design and the appropriate use of assistive technologies. The collaboration among various qualified stakeholders plays a pivotal role in facilitating the provision of aids and promoting the effective use of assistive technologies. This article delves into the subjects of access and barriers within the context of specialized schools catering to physical, motor, and intellectual disabilities in North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous federal state in Germany. Through a questionnaire survey, responses were obtained from teachers concerning 4,027 pupils who utilized assistive technologies, predominantly aids from the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication. The findings highlight a deficiency in resources and an identified need for enhanced qualifications. Additionally, teachers report challenges related to compatibility issues between assistive technologies and users at various proficiency levels. The complexities of impairments often impede the seamless integration of assistive technologies, as they may be deemed “ill-suited” due to their complexity or impracticality in everyday use. Criticism is also directed towards the intricate and time-consuming process of aid provision. The gathered data serves as the foundation for drawing conclusions aimed at advising, developing of devices, and supporting pupils leveraging assistive technologies. Consequently, this article directly addresses central socio-political and scientific challenges in the ongoing pursuit of comprehensive participation for individuals with disabilities.
