The Application of Augmented Reality (AR) in the Pre-construction Stage

This article introduces augmented reality (AR) as a technology that integrates computer-generated information into real-world environments. The merging of virtual and real worlds in AR requires proper display technology, input devices, and tracking. The construction industry is particularly interested in AR applications during the initiation and design stages of projects. The aim of this study was to investigate the acceptance and application of augmented reality (AR) in the pre-construction stage. In achieving this aim, data collection is a systematic procedure of gathering and analyzing relevant information, insights, and knowledge. Analyzing the data can also detect any future problem that can or may occur during the pre-construction stage. The research has identified the AR applications most acceptable to industry players, providing direction on which AR applications should be promoted. Popular AR applications during the initiation stage include project model visualization, safety training, and virtual site intervention. Meanwhile, during the design stage, collaborative virtual models and visualizing building designs in an actual environment are preferred. Overall, the increase in acceptance and willingness of the Malaysian construction industry to adopt AR opens a greater opportunity for continuous research and development.
