A Review of People with Disability’s (PWD) User Experience in Malaysian Mosques

A Mosque is a place of worship and become a center to do many activities like political, social, religious, and institutional activities, and this right also extends to people with disabilities (PWD). This paper aims to review the studies concerning mosque facilities in Malaysia, especially for PWDs. Thus, the following objectives were outlined: (i) to explore the previous studies that have been successfully conducted on Malaysian mosque facilities, and (ii) to find the knowledge gap based on the previous studies on Malaysian mosque facilities. The literature review was conducted to complete the formulated objectives. The relevant information was retrieved from the main databases of Malaysian universities, which consist of a range of journals and articles between 2014 to 2022. Other sources from the common website (i.e. Google Scholar) were also explored. It was then analyzed using frequency analysis of the content-based method to identify the gaps. This study has found that accessibility and facility utilization for persons with disabilities (PWDs) have become prominent issues within mosque facilities in Malaysia. This is consistent with the previous scholars which have categorized it into four areas. This includes i) the entrance facilities, ii) the ablution area, iii) the water closets, and iv) the prayer hall. Using frequency analysis; the entrance facilities contribute about forty-seven (47) articles in total, followed by the ablution area; twenty-two (22) in total, the water closet; fourteen (14) in total, and the prayer hall with eleven (12) in total. These results show that among four, ‘the entrance facilities’, were reported to be the major factor.
