Redesigning Rear-Facing Child Car Seats: Assessing Parental Views on Space Utilization Through a Questionnaire-Based Approach

The study of infant passenger safety in car accidents has gained significant attention in recent years, with a focus on improving the use of child restraint systems (CRS) to minimize the risks of injury or death. While CRS has been a mandatory requirement for infants in Malaysia since early 2020, the implementation of the regulations remains inadequate, resulting in numerous infant injuries and fatalities. To gain a deeper understanding of the issue of implementation of CRS, this research will conduct a questionnaire-based study among parents to analyse their feedback on CRS utilization. The study will gather information on the space constraints in their vehicles, their experiences with current CRS designs, and their willingness to adopt a more space-efficient CRS design. The results of the questionnaire will be analysed to identify common issues and concerns among parents, which will inform the design process of the improved CRS. In conclusion, the study can contribute to the development of safer and more sustainable CRS, benefiting both parents and manufacturers, while reducing the number of infant injuries and fatalities in car accidents.
