Surfactant Based Electrodes for Determination of Biogenic Amine Neurotransmitters

This chapter describes the state of the art of surfactant based electrochemical sensors for the sensitive detection of neurotransmitters. Biogenic amines will be explained due to their role in the human body. They have importance on biological functions and are commonly associated with several physical, psychotic, and neurodegenerative brain functions, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases. So, their sensitive and rapid detection are so crucial in clinical significance. Electrochemical methods have many advantages on sensitive assays of analytes from biological samples. They have been preferred for neurotransmitter detection, outclassing more complicated analytical techniques such as conventional fluorescence, chromatography, spectrophotometry, flow injection, and capillary electrophoresis. Surfactans have used in many fields of research studies due their increasing sensitivity in electrochemical studies. In this chapter, we will summarize the surfactant based electrochemical sensors for the assay of biogenic amines as neurotransmitters.
