The 1824 Calcutta School-Book Society Arabic and Persian Edition of Euclid’s Elements: An Unusual Approach to Textbook Production in Colonial India

In 1824, the Calcutta School-Book Society (CSBS) issued an edition of books I–VI of Euclid’s Elements in both Arabic and Persian for use in schools established by the East India Company. The edition represented an unusual approach to textbook preparation. The production of this unusual textbook can best be understood in the context of the Orientalist-Anglicist controversy over the most effective methods of educating the Indian masses.
