AI Governance in European Public Service Media: Policies and Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence Systems

Artificial intelligence and automation offer new opportunities for media in general and journalism in particular. However, their introduction into media enterprises has sparked significant ethical and even legal debates regarding their intended uses and the risks they may pose. In the case of public service media, the challenges arising from the implementation of AI are related to the safeguarding of the fundamental values attributed to these organizations. Specifically, this chapter reviews different guidelines, policies, strategies, and approaches adopted by European public service broadcasters to ensure a responsible application of AI-driven tools and safeguard its legitimate utilization within the organizations.
