摘要

In recent decades, research on psychotropic medication use in children and adolescents has made significant headway, with numerous large-scale studies highlighting their efficacy in treating diverse psychiatric disorders. The parallel use of medication and therapy often yields the best outcomes, leading to symptom remission over weeks to months of treatment. However, patients requiring hospitalization or intensive outpatient programs could benefit from more aggressive regimens of psychotropic medications, a topic of ongoing clinical investigation. In the following chapter, we discuss common medications used to treat a variety of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, calling special attention to starting dosages and titration schedules from major randomized clinical trials. Additionally, we address the clinical decision-making process regarding the initiation of rapid titration regimens based on the degree of functional impairment and urgency of symptom relief. Finally, we explore off-label and emerging treatments, again with special consideration of acute management strategies for child and adolescent psychiatric disorders.
