Estimation of Glacier Velocity of Ny-Ålesund, Arctic Using Sentinel-1 Remote Sensing Data

Glaciers serve as crucial indicators of climate change and global warming through a variety of mechanisms. The objective of the current study is to determine the Line-of-sight (LOS) velocity of Vestre Brøggerbreen (VB), Austre Brøggerbreen (AB), Midtre Lovénbreen (ML), Austre Lovénbreen (AL), Edithbreen (EB), Pedersenbreen (PB), and Botnfjellbreen (BB) glaciers of Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard in the Arctic region, as a means of elucidating the effects of global warming and climatic change. It is important to estimate the glacier velocity to have a precise understanding of glacier dynamics and climatic change. Obtaining in-situ measurements of dynamic glaciological parameters poses significant challenges. The use of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data, serves as a valuable tool for monitoring and estimating the LOS velocity at sub-millimeter levels. In the proposed study, Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data was acquired from 04/06/2019 to 02/10/2019 with a 12-day temporal resolution. The data were processed using the OpenSAR Jupyter Notebook, employing specialized conda environments and tools, including the Hybrid Plugable Processing Pipeline (HyP3) and Miami InSAR Time Series Python (MintPy). The analysis yielded a maximum LOS velocity rate of 10 cm between June 4, 2019, and October 10, 2019.
