STEM Education: Global Competencies and Citizenship

Global competencies (GC) are an overarching set of attitudes, skills, knowledge, and values that are interdependent, interdisciplinary, leveraged, and applied in a variety of school contexts. GC comprises innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship; learning to learn, self-awareness and self-direction; collaboration; communication; global citizenship and sustainability goals, with relevance in the preparation of students for STEM careers. When effectively integrated with the STEM curriculum, GC enrich opportunities for the preparation of globally competent STEM professionals: learners are equipped with competencies to examine local, global and intercultural issues, understand and appreciate different perspectives and worldviews, collaborate with others, and take responsible action toward sustainability and collective well-being. STEM curriculum that reflects GC provides opportunities for students to develop technological knowledge and skills they will need for future learning and careers.
