Enhancing STEM Education Through Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization
摘要
Addressing equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization (EDID) concerns in education are hallmarks for innovative, just, vibrant, and diverse global communities. This chapter addresses the role of EDID in enhancing student learning and outcomes in STEM education in K-12, with examples from various nations. The following topics are covered: (1) definitions of EDID; (2) pedagogical approaches to EDID and the promotion of equity in STEM education, which encompasses culturally responsive approaches, consideration of diverse knowledges, and additional language learners; (3) differentiated instruction and universal design of learning; (4) promoting representation and access in STEM education, with consideration for women and girls, students with learning exceptionalities, and refugees and displaced populations; and (5) student STEM identity. Challenges and opportunities in promoting EDID in STEM from K-12, barriers to implementation, including stereotypes, microaggression, and personal bias awareness are discussed. This chapter’s conclusion highlights the affordances of EDID in STEM education, especially within the equity-deserving student population. The chapter has implications for enhancing STEM education across the globe.
