Framing War
摘要
A particular severe way of constraining (or even outright prohibiting) reasonable policy deliberation is to frame normal policy disagreements as really skirmishes in an existential war between Good and Evil. This chapter looks at three cases that are not genealogically related (one did not lead to another) but demonstrate how such strategies as threat inflation, demagoguery, accumulation, strategically ambiguous hyperbole, and arguing by signs both make deliberation seem dangerous, if not actively demonic, and (deliberately) burden rhetors trying to be reasonable and pragmatic about the conflict.
