Walking on the Path of Remembrance: Fabricating the Heritage Trails of Old Dhaka
摘要
The sweeping urban regeneration and rapid expansion of Old Dhaka are engulfing its 400-year-old history as a capital, without considering the tangible and intangible historical significance that remained in the setting. Old Dhaka has all the potential of being a heritage destination for foreign and local tourists, which can be implemented by creating successful multiple touristic heritage trails conserving the dilapidated heritage buildings as the tangible elements, and considering the historic and prevalent cultural activities of the area as the intangible heritage of Old Dhaka. This paper aims to study the opportunity of developing heritage trails in Old Dhaka that as a tool of heritage conservation play an utmost vital role in preserving the city's identity. Analyzing case studies, literature review, and extensive site surveys, the study examined the criteria for heritage trail development, which includes the historic timeline, conditions of the heritage buildings, the previous and present use of the buildings, walkability, and amenities of the neighborhood and overall social, cultural, economic, and environmental considerations. Based upon these criteria, the implications of multiple tourist trails in Old Dhaka, that connect the government-listed heritage buildings which date back to the Sena, Mughal, Sultanate, and Colonial periods, can provide significant economic benefits, promote cultural heritage preservation, and contribute to sustainable urban development. Overall, the research paper discusses the requirements for developing multiple touristic trails in Old Dhaka, the difficulties involved, and adds to the body of knowledge on heritage tourism trails and sustainable tourism development. It also gives policymakers, tourism planners, and community stakeholders useful information for promoting sustainable heritage tourism development in Old Dhaka and other historic urban areas through the creation of touristic heritage trails.
