Urban challenges in Africa, marked by rapid growth, urban sprawl, poverty, and fragile institutions, highlight the intricacies of the continent's urbanization. Beira, historically linked to the ‘Companhia de Moçambique’ from the nineteenth century, exemplifies these challenges. Its significance is emphasized by the activities of port and rail connections, accessing the African hinterland. The city layout promotes connectivity. The 1950s brought modernist designs that were influenced by the Brazilian movement. Landmarks like the Railway Station and the ‘Palácio dos Casamentos’ capture Beira's architectural essence. This architecture, mirroring global trends, was integrated into Beira's landscape, showcasing adaptability. Designs from this era have enhanced energy efficiency, managed rainwater, and thermal comfort. However, modern developments have threatened these architectural gems. This study highlights the need to preserve these sites in the modern architecture. Strategies such as adaptive reuse offer sustainable solutions, ensuring that Beira's legacy aligns with modern urban growth. This aligns with the objectives of understanding the relationship of architecture with the landscape, addressing preservation challenges, and leveraging adaptive reuse for a sustainable future.
