Efficiency and Sustainability in Public Transit: The Sidi Bel Abbès Tramway Line Extension and Energy Recovery System

摘要

This study investigates integrating lithium battery technology to recover braking energy in the extension of a tramway line in Sidi Bel Abbès, Algeria. Tramways are a sustainable urban transport mode, and harnessing braking energy via lithium batteries can enhance their efficiency and environmental impact. We evaluate the optimal energy storage locations on the tram, considering design and safety measures for battery integration. Simulation models assess energy recovery efficiency and operational impacts. Economic analysis examines the investments and savings, confirming the feasibility of this approach. The research was enriched by an internship at SETRAM, providing practical insights and field data. This collaboration helped develop practical, context-specific solutions, demonstrating the potential to improve tramway sustainability and efficiency, contributing to greener urban transport solutions.
