Transient and Inhomogeneous Processes in Open Systems

So far, we have considered steady state processes in open systems, and time dependent processes in closed systems. In this chapter, to widen the scope, we show some simple applications of space and time dependent open system processes. Specifically, we discuss one-dimensional co- and counter-flow heat exchangers and filling and discharge processes, e.g., of gas bottles, rooms, or cavities. As application of the latter we study compressed air energy storage (CAES).
